| Principal Uses Milk Jug To Slow Traffic Around Sch |
An elementary school wants to raise money for a radar-activated sign to slow traffic around the school, but in the meantime, an empty plastic milk jug seems to be working.
Principal Bill Gillenwater of Monfort Elementary School has been pointing the milk jug at drivers who then slow down, apparently thinking it is a radar gun.
He's done this in response to increased traffic brought on by a new shopping center near the school.
Parents are hoping to raise $4,800 for a radar-equipped sign that will show drivers how fast they are driving in the school zone. So far, they have raised about $2,000.
Greeley police have done a study of the intersection that borders the school property. According to police records, there were 15 accidents and 191 tickets issued in a 12-month period there. The speed limit in the school zone is 20 mph.
The city is studying the problem. Traffic engineers have discussed installing a school-zone speed limit sign to remind motorists they are in a school zone. The city also said it would install the radar sign, if the school pays for it.
